INSTALL WITH YOUR AGENT
Let your AI agent install Genie for you.
Paste one prompt into an AI agent that can run commands on your Mac or Windows PC. It installs Genie into FileMaker, checking each step as it goes, then walks you through your first setup.
Copy this prompt
Install Genie for FileMaker on this computer. Read https://www.geniewave.com/install.md and follow it exactly. Ask me before each step that changes anything, then guide me through the first setup.
Works with agents that can run commands on your computer with your permission, such as Claude Code or Codex. A chat-only assistant can’t install software: use the manual download instead.
The instructions your agent follows are public. Read them first if you like: geniewave.com/install.md
On Windows
Your agent follows the same steps on a 64-bit Windows PC. It checks that the download is complete and genuine, keeps a copy of any earlier version, and installs Genie for your user only, with no administrator password. Genie for Windows is a separate plug-in (version 1.5.11) with its own features. Today it does not include Claude Code and Codex in Genie, the panels in Script Workspace and Layout mode, or layout creation and editing, which the Mac version has. We are aiming for Windows to match the Mac version at the start of November 2026. That is an aim, not a promise.
What your agent will do
- Looks at your computer. Your macOS or Windows version and which FileMaker Pro versions are installed. Read-only.
- Finds the current version. Which Genie version is the latest, and where to download it.
- Downloads Genie and checks it. It makes sure the file is complete and is exactly the one Geniewave published.
- Checks that the plug-in really comes from Geniewave. On a Mac, Apple has checked it too. On Windows, the file’s signature must be valid and you are shown who signed it. If anything doesn’t match, the install stops.
- Installs Genie after you quit FileMaker. Into your own user folder only. On a Mac, into the FileMaker versions you pick.
- Keeps a backup of any earlier copy. If Genie was already installed, the old copy is kept in a Saved folder next to it.
- Guides you through setup. One step at a time, waiting for you to finish each one.
How it stays safe
- It asks before each step that changes anything, and shows you the commands.
- No administrator password or rights, and no security settings changed: everything goes into your own user folder.
- It downloads only from Geniewave’s own websites, over a secure connection.
- It checks the download, stops on any mismatch and undoes what it did.
- It never asks you to read it your licence key or your sign-in: you enter those yourself in the app.
- It installs the plug-in and nothing else.
You can read the whole instructions file before you start: geniewave.com/install.md
What happens after
- Open Genie. In Script Workspace or Layout mode, with a file open in FileMaker Pro.
- Pick Claude Code or Codex. The model menu opens on a group called Your own agent. You can use an API key instead, under Settings › Models.
- Install the engine if needed. If Claude Code or Codex isn’t installed, Genie offers Install and asks you to confirm.
- Connect in your browser. Click Connect and sign in with the publisher yourself. Genie shows Connected with your plan.
- Let Genie turn on Local MCP. Claude Code and Codex reach FileMaker through that local connection, which only listens on your Mac. If it’s off, click Turn on: Genie asks you to confirm, then turns it on for you.
- Licence: optional. Reading, inspecting, explaining and debugging are on Genie’s Free plan. Creating or editing needs a paid Genie plan, and you enter its key yourself under Settings › General.
- Optional: your own agent. Local MCP can also connect another client, such as Claude Desktop or Cursor, to FileMaker.
- Ask a first read-only question. For example: “Which FileMaker file is open?” or “Explain what the open script does.”
On a Mac, with Claude Code or Codex, usage comes out of your own Claude or ChatGPT plan, not an API bill. That plan’s limits and the publishers’ terms apply, may change, and Genie doesn’t control them. You need a Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan, or a ChatGPT plan with Codex access. Genie 3.3: Claude Code and Codex, directly inside FileMaker
- Check the plug-in is on. In FileMaker Pro: Edit › Preferences › Plug-Ins.
- Open Genie. In Script Workspace, with the Genie button in its toolbar.
- Add a provider’s key. In Settings › Models, choose a provider and enter its key, or use a local model. Claude Code and Codex inside Genie are not in Genie for Windows yet.
- Licence: optional. Reading, inspecting, explaining and debugging are on Genie’s Free plan. Creating or editing needs a paid Genie plan, and you enter its key yourself in Settings.
- Ask a first read-only question. For example: “Which FileMaker file is open?”

The manual download and the installation guide get you to the same place, no agent needed.
Quick answers
Is it safe?
Your agent asks before each step that changes anything, never needs an administrator password and downloads only from Geniewave’s own websites. It checks the download and stops if anything doesn’t match. You can read the whole instruction file first. As with any agent that runs commands on your computer, read the commands it shows you before you say yes.
What if my agent cannot run commands?
Then it cannot install software for you. A chat-only assistant can explain the steps, but you will need the manual download. The setup afterwards is the same.
Does this work on Windows?
Yes. On a 64-bit Windows PC, your agent follows the same steps: it checks the download, keeps a copy of any earlier version and installs Genie for your user only, with no administrator password. Genie for Windows is a separate plug-in (version 1.5.11) with its own features, so it does not include everything the Mac version does today. We are aiming for Windows to match the Mac version at the start of November 2026. That is an aim, not a promise. The manual download is on the download page too.
Does it change my FileMaker files?
No. The install only adds the Genie plug-in for your user: to the FileMaker versions you pick on a Mac, or to your own FileMaker plug-ins on Windows. It does not open or change your files. Once Genie is installed, it works on a file when you ask it to, and by default every change waits for your OK.
Will it use my API key?
No. The agent never needs your API key, your Genie licence key or your sign-in. When a step needs one of them, you enter it yourself in the app.
